Premiere in Oulu Music Festival March 22nd 2024
Chiaroscuro is a site-specific work combining contemporary circus and choral music. The architecture and light of the foyer of Madetoja Hall inspired the collaboration between the contemporary circus company Ilmatila and the Cassiopeia Choir. During the promenade performance the audience was invited to experience both choral music and aerial acrobatics at close range, with the choir performing across three different levels of the space.
The work was presented three times as part of the Oulu Music Festival, with each performance taking place at a different time of day and in a distinct lighting atmosphere. The Music Centre, completed in 1983, was designed by architect Matti Heikkinen of Arkkitehtitoimisto Uki Heikkinen. In addition to the architectural features, the artworks in the foyer were also integrated into the performance.
